Rainy Day Craft Ideas for Children |

Rainy days can be a drag for both children and adults. Even when it’s rainy outside, there are still plenty of fun things to do inside! Rainy days are the perfect time to break out arts and crafts supplies. These craft ideas for all ages will get your creative juices flowing so you can stop the cries of “I’m bored!!!” and get your children happily crafting! Crafts for Small Children Toddlers and preschoolers can sit at a table (or on the floor) and color or work with shape templates to create animals. Even though toddlers don’t always have a long attention span, coloring is a very easy, no-prep way to keep them occupied for at least a few minutes! They can become frustrated when the coloring page moves around, so try taping the edges down with masking tape or painters tape. Make sure to provide nontoxic, name brand coloring supplies you trust for littles ones who still mouth things and keep any marker caps out of reach since they can be a choking hazard. Preschoolers are generally able to focus for a bit longer and really enjoy decorating print outs and building animals with shapes. There are lots of different shape crafts and shape templates, like the triangle fish idea in this post with free printable triangle templates. Other shape animals, like circle catipillars, are also fun and easy to make. If your child has a habit of tearing paper, try cutting the triangles from craft foam. Foam does not tear easily and is very versatile which makes it a good material for young children to craft with. Foam can be used in place of paper or construction paper for making shapes or, with foam markers, for coloring. Crafts for school aged children School-aged children are probably fairly practiced with materials like scissors, paint, and glue. Accidents and messes can still happen, but they’re generally a lot neater, too! This opens up a lot more crafting possibilities. Popsicle sticks are a great item to have on hand for rainy days. Popsicle sticks can be used to build houses, picture frames, vases, boxes and many other things. Just set your child up with some nontoxic white glue and let their imagination flow! After their creation has dried, it can be painted or decorated with markers. If you have construction paper, break it out along with markers, glue, and scissors and invite your children to make a new board game. Let them decorate the board, create the rules, and then explain how the game works. They can even decorate an old shoebox or cereal box to store their new special game in. If your child is in middle or high school, they may find coloring and popsicle sticks too juvenile. Find crafts and activities that are more appealing, like making friendship bracelets with embroidery floss or creating on-trend items like this cactus wall pendant made with felt. Floss and felt crafts are inexpensive, easy, and usually very popular with older children! Keeping a few age-appropriate craft supplies on hand can help rainy days go more smoothly for everyone with fewer complaints of boredom and requests to watch yet another show.
