Making your own Christmas decorations and ornaments is a fun, inexpensive way to help your children feel involved with the holiday. This post will give you a couple of ideas for ways to make decorations, tags, and ornaments for Christmas using basic supplies. Creating ornaments, garland, and gift tags with your children is a fun activity that also allows young kids to practice their fine motor skills while tracing patterns and cutting shapes. Additionally, it will help show your children that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a meaningful holiday. All you need to make Christmas star garland, ornaments, or custom gift tags is:
To make your star decorations: Fist, print you star templates or trace the ones you want onto printer paper. You can turn your monitor brightness way up and tape the sheet to your screen to trace! Use a light touch to make sure you don’t damage your screen. Cut out the star pattern and trace it on to your paper. Make as many stars as you’d like! You may want to make two or more sizes of stars so you can layer them for added interest. Cut out your stars! If you’re layering stars, pair them up and glue them in place. It’s fun to pair a plain solid color with a printed scrapbook paper. If you’d like to glitter your stars, now is the time to do it! To make garland, punch a hole at the top of one point of each star, then string them all into twine. You may want to knot them in place so they don’t slip around. To make ornaments, punch holes the simply tie a short loop of yarn through each hole. Cutting pieces of twine that are approximately 6 inches long usually works well. The ornament loop will be about 2” long after the twine is tied, which is perfect. Make tags the exact same way as ornaments, except write to/from on them. You can also use the same techniques to make ornaments, tags, and decorations out of air dry clay, polymer clay, salt dough, or cinnamon and applesauce dough. Simply roll our the dough or clay, trace the shapes with a skewer, then cut with a knife. Poke your holes with a skewer or chopstick before baking or allowing the clay to harden. Of course, you can also use a cookie cutter, but using a traceable template is free! Small stars made from clay work really well as wreath decorations, too. Creating Christmas decorations at home with your kids is a great way to keep them busy on a cold, wet day and will help them feel more involved with the holiday without spending lots of money.
